Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live and work in paradise? We sure have! So we asked 25-year-old Eden Martika to share her story…
September 15, 2014 I made the spontaneous decision to move to a tropical island in the Whitsundays, off Far North Queensland, to further my career and experience the island lifestyle.
Hamilton Island is the most accessible island in the Great Barrier Reef as it has a commercial airport with daily direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. Hamilton Island is used almost exclusively for tourism, so it therefore caters for an ever-increasing number of employees, which is where I came in!
I was 23 when I made the move and begun working with Island Hair and Beauty as a qualified beauty therapist. Most of my work days consisted of applying makeup on beautiful brides and bridesmaids, either in the salon or in the resorts and holidays houses around the island…. Tough gig! It’s safe to say the views at work never got old!
I also worked casually at Spa Wumurdaylin and Spa Qualia – Spa Qualia, in my opinion, is one of the most extraordinarily breathtaking day spas in the world and was an absolute treat to work in. I was also lucky enough to work on Alani Charters, a 5-star luxury boat charter around Hamilton Island. Being able to serve guests in front of Whitehaven beach and other islands around the Whitsundays barely felt like work!
Apart from having an amazing job and working with incredible people, my days off were just as unbelievable… They consisted of hiking, drinking coconuts, floating on Catseye Beach, jet skiing, boating, snorkelling, go karting, flying over the reef and conversing with like-minded people.
There are loads of activities and events for staff to get involved in, like the annual Hamilton Island Race Week (where around 250 yachts gather to race), there are loads of fashion events, street festivals, dining events and much more.
Hamilton Island is an amazing place with so many incredible experiences, be it for family getaways, weekend retreats, young or old travellers, soul searchers, weddings, careers or a lifestyle change, this island truly caters for every being.
