Concierge Margot Harsan’s career with The Betsy, in Florida’s South Beach, is six years strong. Born in Romania, she moved to Miami in 2005. Margot loves how her job allows her to share her passion for travel and the tourism industry with her guests, and pass on her tips and recommendations to newcomers to Miami, and Journeys To Come followers, as she so generously does for us here…

Where she takes her own visitors
When my guests visit me, I love to take them to the beach for a relaxing weekend, as well as brunch outdoors on LT Steak & Seafood’s patio. You can’t beat the ocean breeze and the people watching!

It’s a rainy day but we want to explore, what we should do
Miami has a variety of indoor activities suitable for all ages. Just up the street, we have the Bass Museum of Art, and a quick drive over the causeway to Miami proper will lead you right to Museum Park, which features the newly opened Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science as well as the Perez Art Museum.

Recommendations for night-time entertainment
The Betsy features live jazz music six nights a week right in our lobby. Guests are invited to grab a drink at the lobby bar or a table in LT Steak & Seafood to enjoy dinner while watching the performance.

Hotel attractions
Visitors should learn about The Alley and The Orb. The Alley is our walkway between the Ocean Drive and the Collins Avenue entrances of the hotel. In it, guests will find an authentic Italian pizzeria that serves up fresh pizzas, pastas and more daily, as well as the Ventanita, which offers homemade gelato, crepes and coffee. While walking through The Alley, you’ll find a massive white structure suspended in the air, that resembles an egg. This is The Orb, which functions as a walkway between the Art Deco Wing and the Colonial Wing of the property. It connects the two buildings on the third floor, and you won’t even know that you’re walking through it to get from one side of the hotel to the other. Be sure to get a photo of yourself underneath it!

The best shopping and souvenir ideas
There is a ton of shopping in Miami. Just a few blocks north of The Betsy you’ll find Lincoln Road, a pedestrian road that runs for blocks and is filled with various shops and restaurants. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon shopping and people watching. If you’re looking for a more traditional shopping experience, there are two open-air malls within a short drive; Brickell City Centre and the Bal Harbour Shops. You can’t go wrong with a hat as a souvenir – make sure to use it to shade yourself from the strong sun while you’re here.

A child-friendly thing to do or place to go
Your little one will love playing in the sand on the beach while you’re here. We have beach chairs set up right across the street from the hotel, and we also have two pools on property; one rooftop and one courtyard pool. If you’re looking for an indoor activity to cool down, the Frost Science Museum and the Miami Children’s Museum are both great options.

Her best-kept secret or favourite hidden treasure
The Betsy is dedicated to championing arts and culture. We have a Writers in Residence program, which has hosted over 500 writers to date. We have a special room called the ‘Writer’s Room’ on the property which features the desk of Poet Hyam Plutzik, and we invite various authors to come stay with us for a period of time, and all we ask is that they spend their time here usefully and creatively. Each author will also host some type of special event for hotel guests, generally a talk in our Library, where hotel guests and locals can come and participate.

The best way to get to the airport
Getting to and from The Betsy is easily done by car. If you’re renting a car we offer overnight valet parking. If you prefer not to worry about having a car while you’re here, Taxi Cabs & ride share services such as Uber and Lyft are readily accessible, and quite affordable in Miami.

Best time of the year to visit
The winter months in Miami (October – February) have some of the most gorgeous weather. The weather is sunny and hot, but not so hot that its unbearable to be outside. Early December is an extremely popular time, as the notable Art Basel Miami fair is in town, and there are a variety of art shows and special events taking place throughout the city, from South Beach to Wynwood and more.

Anything else we should know when visiting

Miami is so much more than the beaches and bikinis South Beach is often known for, and that’s something that we are proud to showcase here at The Betsy. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with myself or any of our other concierges while here, and we’re happy to recommend a variety of things to do in the area that are catered to your needs and interests.
