Catriona’s Bucket List Destinations

  1. Cuba
  2. Ningaloo – Whale Shark Swimming
  3. Egypt
  4. Gallery Lafayette – Paris
  5. Japan

Discover Japan

Guest Traveller: Adam Burke, Journey Designer for Japan, Scenic

To give us an idea of where the must-see places are in Japan we we’re joined by the Designer for Japan tours from Scenic, Adam Burke.

Coming up on Getaway this weekend: Russia

Catriona chatted with Steven Ingate who pointed Catriona in the right direction for Getway’s recent trip to Russia. Steven celebrated his birthday with an amazing Russian trip to have a Dr Zhivago inspired birthday celebration. Coming up on Getaway this weekend is the 2nd part of a 3-part Russia special. This week they’ll be travelling to villages along the Volga.

Catriona’s favourite things

Ear plugs and eye mask – always have them!

Plus take a wrap – pashmina or wool wrap. Many discount airlines used to have a blanket and pillow pack option but some not available anymore. So take your own just in case – life saver and very versatile.

Australian ‘Bucket List’ Destination

Matt Winter, Owner, Ningaloo Whale Shark Swim, Exmouth WA

Is there anything more exhilarating than swimming with whales? It must be one item on almost everyone’s bucket list. There’s a few places around where you can swim with these majestic beasts but none better than Ningaloo in Exmouth, Western Australia.

Here you can swim with both Whale Sharks and Humpback Whales.

To find out more Catriona was joined by owner of Ningaloo Whale Shark Swim Matt Winter.

They offer three bucket list options:

  • whaleshark swims (with manta ray swims thrown in for free too!)
  • humpback whale swims off the Ningaloo Reef – cannot adequately describe this experience in words but just massive, majestic, awe-inspiring creatures right there in front of you, with you often surrounded by almost deafening whalesong at the same time!
  • Busselton Jetty Undersea Walk, off the deep end of the iconic Busselton Jetty some 1.7kms out to sea.
Suitable for just about anyone 12-88+, no diving experience needed, don’t have to know how to swim or be even vaguely fit! Just have to want to experience our amazing underwater world for yourself up very close and personal, thanks to the $25,000 dive helmet you wear to walk the ocean floor.

Ultimate ‘Bucket List’ location: SPACE

Guest Traveller: Dave Reneke, Astronomer and writer for The Australasian Science magazine

One of the ultimate bucket list destinations is space! Although it’s pretty much out of reach for most of us, there’s still places you can go to get up close and personal with space.

Dave went to the NASA astronaut training centre NASTAR and got to ride the astronaut training simulator. He also got to hang out with Buzz Aldrin and discovered some lesser known things about the moon trip and also visited the HUGE meteor crater in Arizona.

If you’re into star-gazing, Australia’s best destination is ULURU.

Coming Up: Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Guest traveller: Rochelle Steven, BirdLife Australia

Avitourism is travel specifically to see birds and it is one of the fastest growing types of environmental or ecotourism! And it just so happens that next week is National Bird Week and there will be a Aussie Backyard Bird Count running from 17-23 October, and they want YOU to get involved!

Simply record the birds you see via the Aussie Bird Count app or through the website. You’ll instantly see live statistics on the number of people taking part and the number of birds and species counted in your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia.

Not only will you get to know your feathered neighbours, but you’ll be contributing to a vital pool of information from across the nation that will help us see how Australian birds are faring.

You can complete as many counts as you like over the week – so get your friends and family together, head into the great outdoors and start counting!
