David Perry, CEO of The Hotel Windsor, Melbourne

My wife is from Thailand so travelling to the land of smiles is always particularly special. Travel with family makes things more enjoyable by a factor of about a billion. Also, just in our backyard, here in Melbourne, is Mornington Peninsula – an underrated haven. Extremely accessible, yet a world away from the city life. People fly from half-way around the globe to Melbourne and the Peninsula is always on their itineraries. There’s so much to offer: Scenic walks, beaches, cafés and wineries.

Top travel tip

Take your time to enjoy the peace and serenity. There are many scenic drives and walks to explore, all the way down to Portsea. On a fine day, walking to Fort Nepean is relaxing and manageable, and it rewards one with spectacular views of Port Phillip Bay.

Something he always packs when he travels

A sense of adventure, an open mind, and a desire to take in as much as I can. Of course, a holiday is best experienced with a relaxed and worry-free mind, which I am privileged to have thanks to my amazing family and of course my fantastic team at The Windsor.

His bucket list

There’s still so much more for me to see in Australia, and I think we take for granted the many gems around the country. After that comes every other country that I have not yet visited. Space Tourism may be a little pricey for me and I’ve heard the locals are rarely, if ever, seen up there.

A travel disaster – or near-miss

I have to say I’ve been lucky to never experience one (touch wood). It’s a frame of mind, really. Of course, plans can go astray – you miss a connecting flight, you have to sleep on a concrete floor with 20 strangers, miles from anywhere in the middle of Africa; but often there is nothing you can do. Travel is an education and a joy. Just make the most of the adventure and remember that it’s a great story that you and your family can look back on and smile.
