Escape the city and relax like it’s 1923

Journeys to Come’s Jack Walden recently spent the night as a guest of the Lancemore Group at the historic Werribee Mansion Hotel & Spa.

Opulence, elegance and stylish glamour are captured in the transformed Italianate-style bluestone estate of Werribee’s Mansion Hotel & Spa—ready for your escape to the edge of Melbourne.

I’d been dying to spend the night at the Mansion ever since Catriona took the Journeys to Come team there for a working lunch! She’s a fan having prepared for her wedding in the historic location and living nearby.

After a demanding yet productive week of work, an indulgent weekend was beckoning; a quick escape from the city was the answer. Less than 30 minutes drive from Melbourne we were back in the 1920s and ready to relax!

Our first stop: a soothing massage and a life-changing facial (my first facial, but not my last). Followed by a dip in the heated pool.

We were there to discover a super chic and super-secret bar — Mary’s Secret. Styled by the notable Lenzo group, Mary’s Secret was named after Mary Chirnside, wife of Andrew who together with his brother Thomas built the mansion. And it didn’t disappoint.

Previously hidden from the public, this 1920s balcony bloomed into a sumptuous lounge overlooking the historic courtyard. Channelling the elegance of Great Gatsby, we like to think we were stylish in our attire luxuriating in the grand space, sipping Champagne and bespoke cocktails from Everleigh while indulging in mouth-watering canapés (did someone say lamb belly?). The ritual of an evening cocktail not only slows down life’s pace but it’s just a lovely thing to do with a loved one, or gathered friends—we stopped the world and shared our stories of the day.

While luxury and indulgence beckon at anytime of the year, winter is a truly special time to enjoy this country escape. Choose a treatment package from the award-winning spa, relish the flavoursome farm-to-table dining at Joseph’s restaurant (with a glass or two of Lancemore Group’s own wine), or picnic in the formal gardens and feel your worries fade away.

We wandered through the 10 acre formal English-style garden of manicured lawns and immaculate garden beds strewn with colour, appreciating the detail and the fact we didn’t have to maintain them ourselves! Such grandeur at our doorstep! The conservatory garden, specked with light and brimming with glossy foliage, was a delight and a salve for our spirit—we felt like we were characters in a 19th century novel. Has anyone seen Foxtel’s Picnic at Hanging Rock?

We finished our stay with breakfast in bed – accompanied by a very welcome glass of Mumm champagne. Ok, if I have to!

Deciding to return won’t be difficult, we’ll be back in a heartbeat, even if it’s just to sample the best calamari we’ve had in decades!

While relaxing was top of the agenda the area also provided many activities to choose from, like exploring the historic mansion, wandering through the Werribee Open Range Zoo, indulging at Shadowfax Winery or connecting with nature at a natural riverine where you can find native wildlife and plants.
