Halcyon House is the ultimate hotel… it is currently the hippest place to stay in Australia right now.
We did a Getaway story here early this year, soon after it opened and I’ll be honest with you… I learnt about this place because I was following the interior designer on Instagram, she is one of the world’s great interior designers, Anna Spiro – a young woman from Brisbane who has a cult following and style of her own.
Two sisters (Elisha and Siobhan Bickle) bought this really cool 1970’s set hotel on Cabarita Beach. They took a punt and thought ‘we’re going to trust this girl to do up this hotel in her unique style’ and Anna said ‘you cannot say no to anything, you’ve just got to let me roll with it’ and the outcome is magnificent – a truly unique hotel, fabulous restaurant, sublime rooms and a photogenic setting that Instagrammers go bananas over. It’s simply a beautiful place to stay.
I personally like to stay here on my own because they have really good coffee table books that you can take to your room, lounge around on the sofa and just read away. But of course, it’s perfect for special occasions, weekends away and just taking some time to relax, recoup and rejuvenate.
We had PR queen and creator of Wanderlust Union, Sophie Baker, on Journeys To Come radio yesterday and she shared with us why she adores Halcyon House…
Cabarita is still relatively undiscovered, so it’s a very quiet and quintessentially Australian surf town.
It’s only 20 mins from the Gold Coast, so it’s really easy to get to. The 21-room boutique hotel is so unique; every single room is different, so if you stayed one time and popped into your next door neighbour’s room and loved their décor, you could book that room on your next stay.
It also has a two hatted Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide restaurant, Pepper Daisy, ran by head chef Ben Devlin (Queensland’s Chef of Year 2014, ex-Noma and Esquire). Luckily, you don’t have to be a guest to eat at the hotel, so if you’re on the Gold Coast or surrounds, definitely pop in.
It’s a beautiful destination restaurant that’s right on the beach, beautifully styled and proudly uses fresh Australia produce from around the region, beautiful seafood and wine.
The customer service here is sensational – the concierge, Mauro De Riso, is one of the best in the business. Born in Pompeii into a family who own different hotels within Italy, hospitality has been in his blood since day dot. Mauro, as well as a combination of amazing Aussie staff, create a high level of attention to detail and service that makes your stay so beautiful.
