The Hotel Portsmouth, NH, USA

by Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Joshua Labbe knows New England. Having grown up on the beach in South Portland, Maine, he loves all the “wonders” of the state, including tourism’s seasonal ebb and flow of summer bustle and winter quiet – a rhythm endemic to seaside towns.  In his role as General Manager at The Hotel Portsmouth, a member of the Lark Hotels group, he has provided guests with a personalised, home-away-from-home experience since September 2015. The historic building in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA, was built in 1881 as the home of John E. Sise and his family. The Stick Style mansion, at 40 Court Street, is a classic example of a Queen Anne Victorian architecture and is a monument to Victorian success. The 32-room hotel is just steps from Portsmouth’s bustling Market Square, historic sites, and waterfront attractions. Here, Joshua takes us on a tour of his pick of Portsmouth, from chowder to macarons…

Your most popular request…

A lot of our guests ask me to recommend a restaurant or bar has the same vibe and energy as our hotel. Moxy is always the first thing off of my tongue.

Your favorite locale when enjoying a day off…

I love to spend my day off paddle boarding or kayaking down the Piscataqua River.

Best coffee…

La Maison Navarre. Let’s face it, the French know how to deliver a quality product. Don’t even get me started on their macarons.

Where we must go for lunch…

I recommend anything with a water view. You can’t beat the seafood chowder at Riverhouse while watching the tugboats pass by.

It’s a rainy day outside but we want to explore, what we should do…

Grab a Lark umbrella and take a walk to look through the archives at the Athenæum, or catch a show at the Music Hall.

An absolute must-do or must-see before leaving Portsmouth…

Go see Don Gorvett actually WORK in his studio on Market Street. We have 19 of his original prints hanging throughout the hotel.

What you love about your hotel…

The ability to feel like you’re truly at home during a trip, while still having all of the luxuries of a larger hotel.

Anything else we should know about when visiting Portsmouth…

Portsmouth is one of the most walkable cities in the Northeast, drenched in history and hidden gems. Make sure you set aside enough time to stroll through all of the streets.
