How to give Bali locals ‘an extra smile’

by Tuesday, March 12, 2019

Dipa, the 22-year-old Balinese concierge at Bloomfield Hotel in Bali, loves his island home. When Dipa has a day off, he goes trekking to Mount Batur or hangs out at the local Banjur Hot Springs, with his friends. He says he also loves knowing that guests who stay at his hotel love his island. What a great quality in a concierge! Let’s explore Dipa’s version of Australia’s favourite holiday isle to our north…

Dipa.

Where he takes his own guests when they visit

I love to encourage them to do a cooking class at our place and to visit the local market. At the local market, they can see a lot of local herbs that we use in our cooking. They can also see the locals and interact with them. I believe it’s a good experience for them.

What he recommends as night-time entertainment

If they want a one of a kind experience, they can go to Dhyana Pura street, where they can enjoy performances by the lady boys. They dress up like Lady Gaga or Mariah Carey. It’s a fun thing to watch.

Which key phrase or phrases visitors should learn

Most of the people here speak/can understand English. So a simple word like ‘terimakasih’ which means ‘thank you’, or ‘permisi’ which means ‘excuse-me’ would give them an extra smile.

Where to find the best shopping and souvenirs

You can go to Seminyak. There’s plenty of unique shops there. Balinese coffee for coffee lovers or just a simple rattan tableware would be lovely to bring home.

A child-friendly thing to do or place to go

Waterbom Bali is a fun place to go as a family. It’s a fun waterpark that everybody can enjoy.

His best-kept secret or favourite hidden treasure

Tabanan: not many people visit this area. It’s actually very beautiful and less touristy. It’s also my home town.

The best way to get to the airport

Nowadays, we have a lot of online cab options, like GrabCar or GoCar. You can download the app and order a car. It’s ok for drop-off but not for airport pickup. But the most convenient way is to ask your concierge to book the car for you.

Best time of the year to visit

Anytime of the year is a good time to visit Bali but if you want good sunny days, you can visit us between June and September as they’re the best months to enjoy the beaches.

Anything else we should know when visiting

Bali is not extremely huge but each area offers a different vibe. Just make sure you book the hotel in the area you want. For example, if you want to experience Bali like the old days, Sanur is the best place. Nusa Dua is where the five-star, luxurious hotels are. Kuta is a party place for youngsters. Seminyak is trendy, and Canggu is where the cool cafes are.

P.S. Our hotel is just between Seminyak and Canggu, so you can go to the most instragammable places then go back to a tranquil place with rice-field view.
