Featured Aussie Destination: The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens
Catriona spoke with Dr Brett Summerell, Deputy Executive Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, in light of the amazing garden’s 200th-anniversary celebrations!!!
Catriona is a proud ambassador of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and has many treasured and fond memories growing up running around here.
How amazing is it that in 1816 our ancestors had the foresight to preserve a block of land so close to the Harbour and so close to the city and to turn it into such a paradise for generations to enjoy!
A must visit right now – The Calyx. The ‘Sweet Addiction Exhibition’ is the first to open in The Calyx, a world-class horticultural exhibition space and Sydney’s newest must-see attraction.
Sweet Addiction is an interesting cultural and botanical story that shows us how plants intersect with our daily lives and just how important they are. Plus, it’s centered around our favourite plant – the chocolate plant!
See the awe-inspiring interior green wall while you’re in The Calyx – it’s the southern hemisphere’s largest complete with over 18,000 plants!
A fantastic program the get the under 5’s involved in? Dandelions. Every Tues & Thurs, kiddies can learn about plants and how important it is to treasure these sorts of incredible environments.

‘Hot right now in Sydney’ interview with the one and only uber stylist Megan Morton!
The go-to lady for style, creativity, shopping and all things beautiful in Sydney.
Her top 3 favourite places to shop in Sydney:
- Koskela Rosebery
Incredible Indigenous weaving in light, bold and soft sculpture – it’s mind blowing! The collaboration, a first of its kind, combines traditional weaving techniques used in Arnhem Land with Koskela’s contemporary design aesthetic to create a truly beautiful design product @ 1/85 Dunning Ave, Rosebery NSW 2018.
It’s like Smiggle, but for grown ups. It’s a Copenhagen brand that is located in Paris, London, New York and now Sydney! Most incredible wire coat hangers – with hot pink, navy thread with titanium – next level. Decor that’s a humorous version of itself @ 8/285A Crown Street, Surry Hills Sydney.
- Becker Minty
Make their own to-die-for XMAS cakes made by their Tasmanian mother and the ultimate man gifts like flavoured toothpicks and coloured shoelaces. @ Shop 7, 81 Macleay St, Potts Point NSW 2011.

Guest Traveller Anthea Loucas Editor-in-chief of Gourmet Traveller Magazine
50 years of Gourmet Traveller! Congratulations to the iconic mag.
One of Anthea’s favourite lunch spots – Ten William’s Street for a slice of Milan in Paddington Sydney. The wine list is far reaching and interesting and the food is incredible… classic Italian with a twist.
Sydney’s food scene has taken great strides in the last decade and in the last five or so years, we’ve seen the next gen stepping up and are creating restaurants that are brilliant with food, service and are fun.
A great dining experience is 30% food – if you have terrible service and the ambience isn’t right – it ruins the experience.
Iconic Sydney food = By the sea, like Icebergs at Bondi.
Anthea’s favourite hotels in Sydney right now
- Park Hyatt
For luxury, afternoon tea, views, location – 10/10.
- QT Sydney
Location, personality, amazing team.
- Primus Hotel Sydney
Art deco property in Sydney – it’s absolute glamour and is still a bit of a secret.
Woollomoloo Wharf. Great service, views and location.
‘Hot right now in Sydney’ interview Paul Cave Creator of the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb
Paul’s father-in-law slept outside Wynyard Railway Station to buy the first ticket on the first train to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. When he was sick and nearing the end of life, he gave Paul this ticket and Paul was holding it during his chat with Catriona. Very touching.
He was always so passionate about the bridge and has now created this incredible experience for all to enjoy.

Top tip: Go at dawn – the changing light is beautiful.
Coming up on Getaway with Catriona’s Mum Heather!
Heather travelled to Russia with Catriona and the Getaway team. On tonight – the final in the 3-part Russian special travelling to St Petersburg.
Heather was amazed at the cleanliness of Russia! There was a woman who picked up a cigarette butt then walked about 20 yards just to pop it in the bin! – The locals really look after the place.
Heather adored the history of St Petersburg… the palace, the opulence, the art, the workmanship – sensational. And the people were so lovely and friendly.
Catch more from the Journeys To Come radio show throughout the week.
