Luxe digs amongst grapevines & horse studs in country Victoria

by Tuesday, June 26, 2018

This week’s Concierge in the spotlight is Anthony Kenworthy, from Mitchelton Hotel and Day Spa, on the banks of the Goulburn River in Victoria’s Nagambie, just 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne. Andrew grew up in the region, in a small town called Avenel, 15 minutes from Mitchelton. He spent 20 years living and working in Melbourne “before making the change to move back to my roots” in this picturesque and iconic location. Mitchelton’s new, Hecker Guthrie-designed luxury boutique complex, opened in December 2017, aims to “fuse the design with the property’s existing Robin Boyd structures”. The earth-toned interiors take inspiration from “the local terrain and wine producing background … to reflect the look of the countryside and horse stud district”. Let’s join Andrew as we explore this stunning addition to Victoria’s regional tourism offerings…

Favourite locale when enjoying a day off

That would have to be my hometown of Avenel.

Where he takes his own guests when they visit

Besides Mitchelton of course, l take them to one of the other wineries in the region. I also like to explore the historic towns in the area or have a lazy lunch at one of the local cafes.

It’s a rainy day but we want to explore, what we should do

On a rainy-day, l would suggest that you start with a treatment in our beautiful spa or a visit to the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art. The Gallery is housed in the cellar and displays works that represent 15 different art centres and communities throughout Australia as well as our own local Taungurung Clan. Follow this with lunch in our restaurant, Muse, where Dan our Executive Chef has created a menu inspired by local produce and local producers. l recommend ordering several dishes to share, while savouring an award-winning wine or two from our Cellar Door. After lunch, meander over to our Cellar Door and partake in tasting over 20 of our wines. And why not end the session with a glass of wine in front of the Cellar Door open fire. Before you leave the Cellar Door, don’t forget to stock up on some Ministry of Chocolate products. Follow this with a cheese platter and a glass of wine while relaxing in the hotel lobby on one of our luxurious sofas in front of our fire. And don’t worry if you forget your umbrella – we will happily provide you with one to keep the rain at bay while you enjoy your rainy-day at Mitchelton.
