Qualia, one of the world’s best luxury resorts, is located on the northern-most tip of Hamilton Island. This multi-award winning accommodation gem is blessed with breathtaking views of the surrounding Whitsunday Islands and Coral Sea and offers an array of unforgettable experiences.
We spoke with Qualia’s executive concierge Laurelle Fazel to find out just what makes Hamilton Island and this gorgeous resort so magical…
Why is Hamilton Island the ultimate island escape?
Hamilton Island is the perfect base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. You can fly direct to Hamilton Island from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns so your holiday starts as soon as you land! There is plenty of variety when it comes to selecting accommodation, with styles and budgets to suit everyone. Whether you are travelling for a luxury gourmet spa experience, looking to reconnect with your partner or family, celebrating a wedding or babymoon, hungry for adventure, or simply want the ultimate relaxation holiday; Hamilton Island has everything you need and more.
What is an absolute must-do while we’re here?
There are so many! Challenge yourself and climb Passage Peak to reap the rewards of a 360-degree view of the Whitsunday Islands and beyond. Follow this with a helicopter scenic flight over world famous Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the iconic Heart Reef landing back at Hamilton Island Golf Course, located on neighbouring Dent Island, for a round of golf – or one of their fabulous Clubhouse lunches! The Turtle Discovery tour held on Catseye Beach is perfect for the family and you can’t go past sunset cocktails at Bommie Deck located at Hamilton Island’s Yacht Club. However, you can’t come to the Whitsunday’s and not enjoy a day out sailing and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef!
Best breakfast spot?
The Marina Deli – it does amazing fresh juices for a healthy to start the day and their breakfast muffins are legendary! It’s the perfect spot to grab one (or two) great barista coffees and people watch.
Where shall we head for a picnic?
It’s a secret! If you’re staying at Qualia, let the staff arrange a private boat transfer to a secluded beach, where you will find a full picnic set up in the pristine Whitsundays sands. Trust us, this is no ordinary picnic – with a rug, cushions, umbrella, and chilled Champagne on ice to ensure you enjoy your gourmet picnic in complete comfort. Otherwise, head up to One Tree Hill, where you overlook the piercing blue waters and breathtaking views of the surrounding islands. Pick a grassy spot on the hill in the afternoon to watch a memorable sunset with the One Tree Hill bar and cafe nearby to provide drinks and nibbles.
Top tips for making the most out of a weekend stay?
Plan ahead! Hamilton Island has an amazing app and website, as well as our ever helpful concierge team where you can request and book your restaurant reservations, spas and tours before you arrive. This allows you to personalise your time on the island, make the most of what is on offer and minimise the risk of missing out on popular options – you can simply switch off, relax and start to enjoy your holiday as soon as you arrive.
During the major events, race week, the ballet etc, have there been any crazy requests?
Many are varied! We are fortunate that on Hamilton Island, we have great resources and such a strong team of skilled staff with so many different areas of expertise, that we are well placed to meet all types of requests.
Helicoptering milk out to a super-yacht while they were out of the marina, or arranging ice sculptures, palm trees, fire twirlers & Hawaiian dancers for a theme night on a boat are some of the types of requests we receive.
How difficult is it working on the island on a personal level?
It’s actually not at all, I’ve been here almost sixteen years (on and off). Everyone here is so passionate about the island and guest experience, so it certainly makes it easy to do my job – and the view isn’t bad either! We are a small community so there is a great camaraderie with life-long friendships formed. There are also plenty of community activities and events always happening, with the Hamilton Island School Christmas concert before Carols by Candlelight at the beach being one of my favourite nights of the year.
How do you relax?
I’m very passionate about cooking, so I love to invite friends over for dinner. We are quite spoilt here with fresh seafood and produce and I have a small spot to grow my own herbs. You can’t beat a good book under a palm tree too!
Qualia is famous for romance, have you been roped in to help on any crazy romantic gestures?
Always! My favourite recently was helping a nervous groom with a surprise proposal. We arranged a scenic helicopter flight from the Qualia helipad with a third “tourist” guest on board – who was secretly a photographer to capture the moment they flew over Whitehaven Beach to see the message written in the sand “Will You Marry Me?” which had been positioned by Hamilton Island wedding staff beforehand… she said yes!
What do you love most about Qualia?
The amazing sensory experience that settles on you as you pass through the imposing gates at the property’s entrance; they provide a sense of exclusivity that the resort is known for. The beautiful landscaping and conscious layout of the stand-alone pavilions underpin the understated luxury that Qualia provides. The pavilions offer an intimate, tranquil sanctuary for guests, which leave them feeling as though they have this piece of paradise all to themselves, yet they can still access our full range of personalised resort services. It’s true indulgence!
What makes Qualia so exceptional?
The long-term vision of Bob Oatley and the Oatley family is to create a truly unique, Australian, luxury resort – this is really what has set us apart as exceptional. Their continued commitment and investment in this vision ensures that the Qualia and Hamilton Island teams have the support needed to continue to deliver exceptional service and memorable experiences.
