If you haven’t been to Granada, the city in southern Spain’s Andalusia region, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it’s time to go! Medieval architecture, dating back to the Moors, is what it’s famed for – especially the Alhambra: a hilltop fortress of royal palaces, patios, reflecting pools, fountains and orchards. Just exquisite. Miriam Exposito, the Director of Room Mate Leo, has spent 17 years in this sublime place. She generously shares her insider’s knowledge about this magical place right here…
Favourite locale when enjoying a day off
I love hiking! I enjoy any mountain landscape.
Where she takes her own guests when they visit
To the Alhambra, to the Albayzin, to Sacromonte, and to enjoy a good time eating tapas. There are so many magical and amazing places in the city that sometimes I do not know where to start…
It’s a rainy day but we want to explore, what we should do
Granada does not lose its magic aura in the rain, but if you still want to be covered, I recommend the Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, the Alcaizería, or a good hot tea in the ‘Teterías’ of Calle Calderería Nueva.
What she recommends for night-time entertainment
If you like flamenco, I would recommend ‘Zambra Granadina’ in the Sacromonte Caves. If you like to enjoy a good dinner and spectacular views, the two best options are in the Mirador de San Nicolás.
Key phrase visitors should learn
¿Dónde puedo encontrar un buen bar de tapas? – Where I can find a good tapas bar?
Where to find the best shopping and souvenirs
The best shopping areas include Calle Recogidas, Calle Mesones, Calle Alhóndiga, and Calle Reyes Católicos, but if you want a good local product or a souvenir, your option is Alcaizería, the old Arab market of the city.
A child-friendly thing to do or place to go
Undoubtedly, as a mother of two children, I would recommend a day at the Parque de Las Ciencias, and a visit to the Federico García Lorca Park.
Best way to get to the airport
The best option for price is the bus, and for comfort the taxi.
Best time of the year to visit
It is always a good time… Everything will depend on the preferences of the guest. If you like good weather and a pleasant temperature: March, April, May, September and October. If you do not mind a bit of cold or a little heat, and you like to visit the city with fewer tourists: January, February, June, July, August, November and December. Of course, if you want to see the Generalife in all its glory, the spring months are the best.
Anything else we should know when visiting
The Alhambra is the second most-visited monument in Spain and tickets are limited. Therefore, we always recommend booking the ticket in advance. Of course, it will be a pleasure for us to help you get your ticket.
