Elisabete Fonseca is Concierge at the Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade, in Lisbon, Portugal. Paris-born, Elisabete has worked at the hotel for 20 years and finds the role to be “very fulfilling. It allows me to be creative, and I love to meet different people each day coming from all over the world. As well as facing daily unexpected challenges. I really enjoy being able to overcome obstacles”. Let’s join Elisabete in Lisbon…

Elisabete Fonseca.

Favourite locale when enjoying a day off

Lx Factory was an old textile factory transformed in to a large complex, full of artistic shops, restaurants as well the bar Rio Maravilha (great rooftop bar) located in one of the building’s top levels, where we can have a drink with a fantastic view over the main bridge over Tejo river.

Where she takes her own guests when they visit

I show my guests the amazing Lisbon 7 hills on board a tuk tuk, and one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in Lisbon called Alfama. I will make a stop at Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte to take a picture from the highest point of the city.

It’s a rainy day but we want to explore, what we should do

The Greenhouse, is one of the city’s most beautiful spaces. You can also visit the Museum Collection Berardo, a modern gallery in Belém with contemporary art exhibits which include works from Picasso, Dali and Warhol.

Her recommendations for night-time entertainment

I recommend Beco, a new concept by Jose Avillez (One of the most renowned Portuguese chefs). A hidden door leads you to a show cave where you can try an incredible 12-course tasting menu while you watch a cabaret show. Don´t miss it, as well the Timeout Market, a large fresh food market but also a food court with wonderful Portuguese chef’s creations. And, of course, our AdLib Restaurant, with a special degustation menu by our chef Daniel Schlaipfer.

Key phrase or phrases should visitors learn

Olá (Hello), Vinho Verde (green wine), amazing wine pair that fits beautifully with seafood, fish or sushi) and Obrigado (thank you)

The best shopping and souvenirs

I highly recommend the boutique Vida Portuguesa. They bring to life many Portuguese brands and souvenirs that only our grandfathers remember. We can also find there the amazing Ac Brito soaps that Oprah recommended on her show.

A child-friendly thing to do or place to go

Discover the Oceanarium, which was named the world’s best aquarium. This is a cool place for kids and adults. You can also ride the Hippobus, an ambitious vehicle which travels land and sea.

Best kept secret or favourite hidden treasure

Jardim do Torel, it’s the perfect spot to get away from the city and relax.

Best way to get to the airport

The best way to get to the airport is by taxi that is always available everywhere and it takes around 20 minutes to arrive at the airport. Otherwise, you can also book a private transfer in a luxury Mercedes car, you just need to ask to one of our ambassadors at the reception or our concierge.

Best time of the year to visit

The best time to visit Lisbon is in spring – April & May, when the flowers bloom and the hot weather shows up.

Anything else we should know when visiting

Don’t forget to bring the sunscreen… we have almost 300 sunny days per year in Lisbon.
