I’m a lover of all things French, and when I visited Villa Howden I felt like I’d travelled much further than to Tasmania’s Huon Valley.
Villa Howden is on the shores of North West Bay just 15 minutes from Hobart. Built in the 1970s, the property has been a private home, health centre, restaurant and is now a small, boutique hotel. Owner Val Harding has included French influences in furniture, furnishings and light fittings and has created a peaceful place for guests.
There are just ten suites, all a wonderful mix of antique and contemporary, decorated with luxurious furnishings and antiques. Val’s eye for detail is evident wherever you look. Real French doors from Provence, mirrors and beds blend to create a little bit of France in Tasmania.
Dining is a memorable experience in elegant surroundings. Fresh produce is brought in every day from local farmers and fishermen to create sublime seasonal dishes.
The Piano Bar adjoining the dining room offers cocktails and local and imported wines before and after dinner. The sun room has lots of comfortable sofas and is used for intimate dining experiences.
Villa Howden has a large, indoor heated pool in its own building with full-length windows opening onto courtyards and overlooking the bay. The outdoor terrace can be enclosed and heated and creates another dining venue.
Landscaped gardens are perfect for a game of petanque or lawn croquet, and at night guests star gaze through the Villa’s telescope.
Relax in front of the fireplace, snuggle into the library or challenge your partner to a board game. Like me, you may never want to leave!

WHAT TO WEAR
‘I was kinda glam here, I felt the need to dress up for such an elegant hotel, but its mega relaxed, just be comfy and settle in.
Grab a hire car from the airport. It’s not quite in the heart of town, but a great place to base yourself for daytrips.
Perfect for a Romantic Getaway!
