One of the many, many things I love about Bali is the variety it offers. From accommodation, food, beaches, entertainment, culture, shopping, island tours, relaxation and activities – it’s all there for every taste and desire.
I headed to Nusa Dua, which revolves around the beach and water. You can chill out by a pool or pluck up the nerve for an adrenalin rush.
I headed to Tanjung Benoa Beach, a few minutes from the luxurious resorts of Nusa Dua. Like many beachside destinations in Bali, Tanjung Benoa was once a fishing village with an old dock. The development of its peninsula has been significant since the 1980s with hotels, resorts and watersports, shops, cafés and restaurants.
Some of the old Tanjung Benoa remains and sharp contrast to the luxury hotels can be found at the peninsula’s northern end. Every day between 4am and 6am local fishermen sell their catch at Pasar Desa Pakraman. It’s popular with local housewives and professional chefs.
Tanjung Benoa Beach is watersports wonderland – if it floats, flips or flies through the water, this is where you will find it. There’s parasailing, donut boating, banana boating, jet skiing, water skiing, wake boarding, snorkelling and the popular flying fish.
I found parasailing to be a perfect way to check out everything from up high – once I was able to open my eyes! I felt more comfortable with the jet ski. It’s a combination of jet drive power (up to 700cc) and personal watercraft. I was beginning to get the feeling that most of the activities on offer were sure to get the adrenalin flowing!
I don’t remember a lot about my next activity, as I had my eyes closed for a lot of the time, but I insist I did enjoy it! The new flying fish uses a rubber boat which looks like a real flying fish as it has wings on both sides. It is actually the merger of three banana boats with a rubber link connecting them. It carries just three riders and a guide – two people on each side to maintain balance while it soars at break-neck speeds. It is not for the feint-hearted…
After a day of action and adventure, there is surely no better place to enjoy than AYANA Resort & Spa at Jimbaran Bay. It is Bali’s only integrated resort and shares its beautiful 90 hectares with sister hotel, Rimba Jimbaran.
AYANA sits on limestone cliffs above the Indian Ocean and has 290 rooms and 78 private villas tucked away from the main part of the resort. It delivers holiday luxury in every imaginable way. Some of that can be found in Bali’s largest aqua-tonic seawater therapy pools.
Rooms are spacious, traditional in design and highlighted with Balinese carvings, sculptures, paintings and artefacts.
Two spa villas sit on rocks in the sparkling ocean and were designed to blend with the environment. They have thatched roofs, interiors follow the natural contours of the rocks and beautiful local Merbau wood has been used extensively.
This beautiful property oozes elegance, romance and style and the word “occasion” just kept leaping into my mind. Honeymoon, birthday, rekindling a romance or just rewarding yourself for no reason at all.
Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining. Enjoy local Balinese dishes or try cuisine from other parts of the world. Fine dining, snacks, light meals, delicious cocktails. All you need to do is decide.
With so much going for it, it isn’t easy to find anything that sets it apart, but I just loved the legendary Rock Bar. It is consistently named one of the world’s best bars and is the place to catch one of the famous people visiting Bali.
Rock Bar is on natural rocks 14 metres above the ocean at the base of towering cliffs, the open-top bar is a truly glamorous sunset, dinner and after-dark destination. Music comes from a DJ booth carved into the cliff-face as diners and dancers while the night away.
If you are a holiday shopper, don’t despair. There is so much choice nearby you will fulfil every gift on your list and find a few extra delights for yourself. It’s all part of the reward.
